Museum Unaware of Missing Edvard Munch Painting

Three stolen paintings from the Malmo Art Museum in Sweden, including an Edvard Munch valued at $1.5 million (the painting of two dogs titled, Two Friends), were recovered in October earlier this year. A 52-year-old-man, later given extended probation on theft charges, claimed that he found the paintings amongst debris on a wharf near the museum.  The police, who discovered the paintings while investigating a separate crime, contacted the museum to report the paintings' ascertainment.  The museum had not been aware that the paintings were missing from their storage racks.

Since the recovery of the paintings, the Malmo Art Museum has upgraded their security measures and experienced an increase in funds, presumably due to the amount of attention surrounding the museum after the incident.

MoMA May Be in Posession of Stolen Cezanne

French engineer, Pierre Konowaloff, has filed a lawsuit against the Metropolitan Museum of Art, claiming his rightful ownership of a Cezanne painting that the museum holds in its private collection. Konowaloff states that the painting was stolen from his great-grandfather in 1918 by Lenin’s Bolshevik army after they raided his house and looted his extensive art collection. Konowaloff’s attorney argues, “This goes to the heart of how these highly respected institutions acquire what they have and what responsibilities they have in getting them.” In response, the MOMA issued a statement defending its ownership of the painting and claims that “this lawsuit is totally without merit”. Konowaloff also has a similar lawsuit against Yale University for ownership of Vincent van Gogh’s “The Night CafĂ©”.

Steve Martin writes about Art

Steve Martin, the acclaimed comedian and actor, takes on the art world in his new book titled, "An Object of Beauty". Martin's knowledge about the art world is well displayed as he discusses the tale of Lacey Yeager, the book's main character, in her trials and tribulations at moving her way up from the basement of Sotheby's to a space all her own. Sketchy dealings, affairs with rich collectors, and a close association with a rising star artist, lead to further entertainment in the story.

Brancusi Artworks in Auction

Towards the end of November, two of Brancusi's artworks will be put up for auction in Paris. After Brancusi's death in 1957, he bequeathed all the works in his studio to the French state. So the fact that two are going up at the same time, makes this truly a rare market event. The artworks being presented are Brancusi's The Kiss (Column), 1935, and The Gate of the Kiss, 1935-38. Between the two of them, they are estimated to rake in somewhere between €900,000 and €1.2m.

Technology designed for Rock Concerts now being used for Virtual Reconstructions

New technology in light projection is now being used for reconstruction purposes. This 16th century German mural, missing a sequence from its ceiling, was restored by combinging a watercolor copy of the missing portion from the Rudesheim municipal archive with digital imagery. A specially designed software also allowed for the projection to adapt to the curvature of the wall, making the reconstruction that much more life-like. Michaela Janke, creator of this new conservation method stated, "its non-invasive and completely reversible. It also helps the spectator clearly distinguish between the original and the newly restored areas. It's not an attempt to mislead the spectator into thinking that the mural is completely original"

MICHAEL DAVID

November 4th - 27th, 2010
Opening Reception Thursday November 4th, 7:00 – 9:00pm
Artist Will Be Present

On November 4th, Michael David will premier his new series “Tondos, Night Skies and Silence” with the monumental nine foot red tondo encaustic entitled: “All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes.”

The inspiration for the title was drawn from a Pete Townsend record that references early Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef spaghetti westerns—with a “wink” to the current immigration controversy in Arizona and a nod to the color “Chinese Red” of the painting. For David, this marks a return to his early controversial and politically charged abstractions, the “Symbol Paintings.” This fusion of the inherent political subtext of Neo-Constructivism and freedom expressed in the pure beauty of the painted surface, truly speaks to the complex and troubled times in which we live.

Warhol Brillo Boxes Downgraded to "Copies"

Over 100 brillo boxes, claimed to be the works of Andy Warhol, have recently been declared "copies" by the Andy Warhol Authentication Board after a three year investigation. The Authentication Board stated that Pontus Hulten, founding director of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, "falsified" their history. Most of the works have already entered the market.

Environmentally-Friendly Art

Recent artworks created for the Five Seasons Festival in Chaudfontaine, Belgium pose a new way of thinking about humanity's impact on the environment. Monumental sculptures ranging from a giant clothespin pinching 20 feet of earth to a fallen tree placed in the shape of a human spine, warp Mother Earth in order to recall the effect that humans can have on this planet. Hopefully, more people will start to look at their ecological footprint differently after viewing this fascinating structures!

Jennifer Steinkamp: Creator of Paintings that Are Living and Breathing

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

7pm

Phoenix Art Museum - Whiteman Hall
Central at McDowell

Admission is Free - Everyone is Welcome

"Steinkamp uses digital projection to transform space, providing the viewer with experiences that are fantastic. While her career began with brightly
colored abstract projections, she has increasingly incorporated nature based imagery into her work -- gnarled trees that twist, turn, and change seasons. In doing so, she has brought digital art into the mainstream of contemporary art. Her use of vernacular imagery and her embrace of beauty result in mesmerizing environments that some say reference the sublime. Like her art historical precedents, Steinkamp conveys the magnitude and power of nature. Most importantly, she has the power to communicate with a broader public and to convert a more traditional audience, familiar with the use of computer graphics only for video games into a constituency appreciative of its other creative applications."

By popular demand, Herb & Dorothy (Vogel film)
will be shown again on January 13th at 4pm.
